Job position - Intellectual Property Director

• Purpose:

The IP Director drives the coordination between Calyxia’s business and industrial strategy and the Calyxia’s IP activity. She/he identifies and protects the company’s intellectual assets with appropriate mechanisms, including patents, trade secrets and trademarks. She/he develops an IP strategy that is adapted to the technical, legal and business environment evolutions through close collaboration with internal stakeholders and continuous monitoring of competitors, suppliers and clients’ IP activities. She/he is the primary contact for all aspects of IP, building bridges within Calyxia through internal trainings and serving as a resource to all teams on IP matters.

• Responsibilities include:

  • Proposing IP strategy, including licensing in/out, and trade secrets/patenting policies, and providing regular updates following competitive analysis, business development, market and technology inputs evolutions
  • Executing IP Strategy:
    • Identification of patentable inventions in Calyxia’s technologies, processes, products and applications
    • Identification of know-how and means of detecting, qualifying, valuing, and protecting trade secrets
  • Preparation of patent searches (e.g. novelty, state of the art, freedom-to-operate, IP-Landscape searches, etc.) as a support of the internal product development as well as M&A and licensing activities
  • Preparation of IP analyses regarding market and technology trends in close collaboration with relevant departments (R&D, Business Development, etc.)
  • Continuously incorporating IP law evolutions into Calyxia’s IP strategy, and advising senior management on the impact of current and expected changes
  • Supporting senior management on licensing and business transactions involving IP, including through direct negotiation on IP terms with suppliers and clients
  • Managing the IP team and supervising the activity of outside IP counsel, with a view of optimizing expenditures and internal resources for sustainable growth of a quality IP portfolio
  • Chairing the company’s IP Committees: Patent Decision Committees, Patent Strategy Committees
  • Maintaining a strong IP culture in the company, through coaching and training of collaborators


• Profile:

  • Significant experience in an environment at the interface between business and IP matters, including patent portfolio management
  • A technical background in chemistry / chemical engineering, preferably with an emphasis on organic chemistry and polymer science
  • Ability to develop and communicate efficiently strategic plans
  • Leadership, agility and communication; ability to decide in a complex environment, and to collaborate with all stakeholders of the company
  • True startup mindset: hands-on, driven, resilient.
  • Familiarity with patent laws and procedures in relevant jurisdictions
  • EQE qualifications would be a definite advantage
  • Bilingual in French and English is preferred
